Northeast Kingdom Human Services (NKHS) offers comprehensive behavioral health support and substance use disorder treatment for individuals across Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Serving children, adolescents, adults, and families, NKHS combines evidence-based practices with compassionate care to support a range of mental health and addiction challenges. Their services are rooted in a commitment to provide community-centered and person-first care to enhance quality of life, stability, and emotional wellness.
NKHS delivers tailored substance use disorder services for adults and adolescents, addressing dependencies on alcohol, opioids, cannabis, and other substances. Through their prevention, intervention, treatment, and recovery programming, NKHS aims to mitigate the health impacts associated with substance misuse. The organization places priority on individuals most at risk, including those who are pregnant and using substances, and ensures access to services within 24 hours. Their Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) focuses on equipping participants with tools to achieve lasting recovery by reducing relapses and enhancing sobriety through community-based methods.
The Impaired Driver Rehabilitation Program (IDRP) is a state-certified initiative designed for individuals convicted of DUI offenses. This program integrates education and evaluation services to help participants understand the consequences of impaired driving and build healthier coping strategies to prevent future offenses.
NKHS’s Community Rehabilitation Treatment (CRT) program is crafted for adults facing serious mental illness, offering comprehensive support and skill-building to enable independent, fulfilling lives. This community-centered approach includes developing personalized treatment plans and providing a continuum of support for both short-term and long-term challenges. Individuals in the CRT program receive access to specialized services tailored to meet their unique needs, whether for crisis management or developing life skills crucial for social and vocational success.
NKHS provides extensive crisis services to individuals facing mental health emergencies, accessible 24/7 through their Emergency Services (ES) hotline. Recognizing that a person’s needs may shift rapidly in crisis situations, NKHS offers a flexible continuum of support, from brief interventions to extensive crisis planning. Mental Health Crisis Specialists, stationed at local Vermont State Police barracks, work alongside law enforcement to de-escalate mental health crises, diverting individuals from emergency rooms and avoiding unnecessary police intervention.
NKHS is also a part of the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a free and confidential emotional support network available via call, text, or chat. The Enhanced Mobile Crisis program allows crisis intervention teams to meet individuals where they are, offering on-the-spot support, safety planning, and referral to other services as needed.
NKHS extends its mission beyond mental health and substance use support to offer developmental services for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. These services promote independence and personal growth, facilitating full inclusion in community life. NKHS also works with community partners to enhance public awareness, provide training, and foster a collaborative approach to behavioral health across Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
Through educational initiatives, community events, and partnerships, NKHS continues to engage local communities, offering resources and information that empower individuals to make informed decisions about mental health and substance use.
